DFCR - Maintenance and Development of Alternative Plants Genetic Resources Group

We focus on field, molecular and nutritional characterization, selection and breeding of varieties and breeding materials of linseed (flax), millet, legume species (fodder peas, cowpeas, beans, chickpeas). Our group is responsible for the collection, preservation and maintenance of genetic reserves of alternative crops, for the morphological description and agronomic testing of sources. The use of molecular markers to characterize each line enables us to identify their genetic background of quality and resistance properties. The measurement of oil, protein, vitamin content and oleic acid profile of the breeding materials is achieved by means of various analytical methods. During our breeding we work focus on effects of climatic changes and we aim to select highly adaptable breeds with special quality for small take holders and also for bigger farms.
